Obstacle racing guide

Your first Spartan race

From fear to finish line

Turn fear into fuel with a practical first-race plan covering running, strength, grip, obstacles, kit and mindset.

The challenge that changes you

You will see the fire jump, barbed wire and mud pits and think, ‘That is not for me.’ That voice is your comfort zone fighting back.

A Spartan race is not about being the strongest or fastest. It is about showing up even when you are scared.

It is you versus your excuses and the voice that says you cannot. When you cross the finish line covered in mud, exhausted and smiling, you know you can handle hard things.

Why do a Spartan race at least once?

Because it reminds you what you are made of. We spend our lives avoiding discomfort. Spartan puts you in it and shows you that you can adapt, survive and grow stronger.

Every obstacle is a metaphor for life: walls you did not think you could climb, weight you did not think you could carry and burpees you did not think you could finish.

It was never only about the obstacles. It was always about the mindset.

How to train for your first Spartan

You do not need to be an elite athlete. You need consistency and grit. Start with three or four sessions a week.

Run · 2–3 days a week

Mix short runs, long runs and hills. Focus on time on your feet, not pace.

Strength · 2 days a week

Start with squats, push-ups, lunges, burpees and pull-ups. Add deadlifts, farmer carries and sandbag work over time.

Grip and core · 1–2 days a week

Hang from a bar and practise holding your bodyweight. Add planks, mountain climbers and hanging knee raises.

Obstacle practice

Find a park or gym with ropes, monkey bars or walls. Practise failing and trying again. That is the real training.

Gear and race day tips

  • Wear trail shoes rather than road runners. You will need grip for mud and rough terrain.
  • Gloves are optional, but can help with ropes and walls.
  • Start hydrating in the days before the race.
  • Carry small gels or snacks for longer distances such as a Super or Beast.
  • Race with friends. A team can turn fear into laughter.

Mindset: the real Spartan training

You will fail obstacles, get tired and want to quit. That is where the real race begins.

When your body says stop, your mind says one more. That moment, covered in mud with your heart pounding, is where growth lives.

Mindful tip: every wall starts in your head

Every obstacle reflects your doubts, fears and excuses. Climbing over it is physical and mental.

When you reach the top and pull yourself over, you are conquering more than a wall.

Real talk

Your first Spartan is about transformation, not time. You will feel every muscle burn. You will fall and fail, then get back up stronger, dirtier and prouder.

When you cross the finish line with the medal around your neck, you will know you are capable of more than you thought.

Final message

Do not wait until you feel ready. Sign up, commit and train for the life you want.

You will get stronger and build the mindset that says, ‘I can do hard things.’ That is the Spartan spirit.
